Ticking Time Bombs

I’ve been a ticking time bomb with a short wick for most of my life. As a wife, parent, relative, friend and co-worker. I’m not always pleasant to be around and patience has been a learned behavior, it doesn’t come naturally to me.

In my previous blog, I talked about characteristic strengths and weaknesses. Anger is a prevalent characteristic in our world today. It’s worth discussing in its very own blog. We all get there at some point. You see it every day at work, at home, on the road, on TV, social media. It’s normalized in our society.

What makes you angry? When you stub your toe do you turn green like Bruce Banner did as The Incredible Hulk? Is it when someone is late and you’re impatiently waiting? Is it when someone lies to you, cheats on you or breaks promises? What pushes your button? A rebellious teen, a toddler that won’t eat and throws spaghetti across the kitchen? Is it unfair decisions, wasted time, injustice, lack of respect? Is it jealousy?

Anger will happen. Focusing on why, how often and with whom you get angry will give insight about this characteristic. Earlier in our marriage, when having an argument, I threw a very expensive crystal glass across the room which shattered against the wall. It was my mothers. I get angry, still today, when I don’t feel heard or that I matter. It began as a child when my parents were not available to me emotionally or physically. Finding that root is a pinnacle point for a Life Coach to support a client in discovering blockades from their God-given purpose. Acknowledgment of anger and healing from the cause allows us to manage these outbursts, hold our tongue and be a comfort for others, instead of being avoided.

James 1:19-20 gives good advice: “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, because human anger does not produce the righteousness that God desires.” (NIV)

Tips to handle your anger:

  1. Keep a “grateful” list. Weekly, I jot down everything I am grateful for. God is constantly giving you what you need and answering prayers.

  2. Increase strength in your faith by recalling the miracles God has performed in your life. Did you know there have been hundreds?

  3. Stop keeping score and start rejoicing for others. It’s hard to be mad at someone when you are lovingly congratulating them, instead of being jealous of what they have or did.
