Ah…another week of trying to be resilient…or at least aware of my resilience. I had a great discussion with Fashionista daughter (who is staying with us temporarily) and Hero Husband, and gathered their thoughts on resilience.
We talked about what creates resilience , and what hampers, or destroys it. Here’s our results:
Resilience Igniters: Resilience Suffocators
Overcoming hardship Fear
Peace Self Pity
Self Control / Discipline
We agreed that failure can go either way depending on the choice of perspective. This list is certainly not all-inclusive, and no,doubt you have ideas of your own.
Reflecting back on last week’s blog, I can’t help but see how a relationship with Jesus, and understanding His love for you produces the “igniters”. Look at what the Bible says:
“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”
Philippians 4:8-9 MSG
When we stand back and survey our life we can see how the hard times worked together to make us stronger and more resilient for future struggles. It’s not as easy to see when you’re in the midst of the struggle – but that’s what faith is, right?
“Faith makes us sure of what we hope for and gives us proof of what we cannot see.”
Hebrews 11:1 CEV
I encourage you to think about your own resilience igniters and suffocators. I encourage you to fill your hearts and minds with the Word of God. Meditate on the good life producing things in your day,..and let praise come from your lips rather than criticism. Strengthen your character, so you’re ready to walk through the flood waters and boldly through the fires:
“When you cross deep rivers, I will be with you, and you won’t drown. When you walk through fire, you won’t be burned or scorched by the flames.”
Isaiah 43:2 CEV
NOW THAT’S RESILIENCE!
But that’s water and fire…what about big hairy spiders? Stay tuned for the answer next week :0
