I love food. Of course I love to eat, but I also love to grow food and I especially enjoy cooking and creating beautiful food. Food is a wonderful gift from God to be sure but it has often tripped me up. Over the years I have struggled with making good nutritional choices. One of my coping mechanisms is portion control. I try to put smaller portions of the calorie rich foods on my plate and larger portions of the healthier foods. It makes sense, right? One thing I’ve observed is that when I let myself get really hungry, the portions of the heavy food get larger than the healthier choices. I make poor choices.
I was reflecting on this when I encountered the familiar passage in Lamentations 3 that reads:
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.””
Lamentations 3:22-24 NIV
If I let myself get too spiritually “hungry” I make poor choices when trying to meet my needs. I become greedy, desperate and I often compromise what I know is best.
I encourage you today rather than gorging on what the world has to offer that you wait on the perfect portion.
The Lord is my portion, therefore I will wait for Him. Keep in mind waiting is much more manageable when you’re not hungry. Fill your day with His word and His praises and your spiritual plate will have the perfect portions!
